One Man Arrested in Connection to Multiple Gun-Related Incidents in Wheeling

Wheeling Police spent much of Tuesday afternoon and evening investigating a number of events that could be related.

Around 2 p.m., officers responded to the Center Wheeling area for a fight. When they got there, police said they did not receive any cooperation from the people involved.

At 3:43 p.m., an officer responded to the North Wheeling area for a crash, where one of the drivers reportedly left the area. The officer on scene learned the crash was a type of “road rage” incident between two individuals involved in the Center Wheeling fight.

Just a short time later, at 4:09 p.m., while the officer was still investigating the road rage crash, he heard gunshots in the North Wheeling area. Another officer responded and located shell casings in the neighborhood. Witnesses described to the vehicle to police, who searched for it, but did not come up with any results.

At 5:47 p.m., a caller into 911 reported a gun was being pointed at her son in the same area of the fight in Center Wheeling earlier in the day. The victim said the suspect left the area by the time police got there.

Officers searched Wheeling for a car matching the description of the one given by the victim, and it was located on Wheeling Island. Police stopped the vehicle and arrested Matthew Richard Hartung, 23, of Wheeling for wanton endangerment and brandishing a gun in the Center Wheeling incident. Hartung is in the Northern Regional Jail pending arraignment.

The information and evidence gathered by police will be given to the Ohio County Prosecutor’s Office, where it will be determined if anyone else will face charges.

There have been no arrests in relation to the shots being fired in North Wheeling as the investigation continues.

The Wheeling Police Department is currently investigating a drive-by shooting.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at 4th and Main in North Wheeling.

Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger says a person in a black vehicle shot a firearm several times.

Officers recovered several shell casings from the scene.

Luckily, no one was injured.
