Plea Changed in Case of Man Who Fatally Shot Wife

The former Bridgeport school teacher charged with murdering his wife has changed his plea.

Michael Chris LaMotte changed his plea from not guilty, to not guilty by reason of insanity on Monday morning. The plea was entered on his behalf by his attorney.

LaMotte was scheduled to begin trial next week for aggravated murder.

The 63-year-old remains in the Belmont County Jail, where he’s been held since his wife Beverly was shot to death several months ago, outside their home on Old Cadiz Road.

The judge ordered him to undergo forensic psychiatric testing.

“The defendant will be evaluated on both bases, number one, the not guilty by reason of insanity that is at the time of the event and number two, the current competency to assist in his own defense,” said Judge Frank Fregiato.

The judge ordered the evaluations to begin immediately. Both sides are set to return to court for a February 17 hearing.
