Police arrested a suspect late Thursday night in connection to the robbery and attempted robbery that happened earlier this week.
Belmont County Sheriff Dave Lucas says they arrested 39 year old John Gavarkavich of the Martins Ferry area. Gavarkavich is facing 2 counts of aggravated robbery. These charges stem from two separate incidents: an armed robbery in Bridgeport at the Exxon on Howard Street and an attempted robbery the hilltop gas station in Saint Clairsville. Gavarkavich is now in the Belmont County Jail.
Sheriff Dave Lucas was asked which gas station attendant did the right thing, the Marathon employee who refused to comply with the armed man’s orders, or the Bridgeport Exxon employee who handed over the money as ordered.
“No life is worth money, ” Lucas replied. “Money can be replaced. So what we say is, give them what they want, let them go out the door, let us go after them, let us arrest them. Then they decide what to do.”
Gavarkavich is also charged on existing warrants with two counts of illegal possession of drug documents and two counts of forgery.
The sheriff says the hold-ups were clearly motivated by drugs.
