Police Chief Receives Surprise Recognition for Support of Armed Forces

A regular meeting of the Martins Ferry City Council proved to be anything but routine as the police chief received a special award, unexpectedly.

Chief John McFarland had no clue as dignitaries filled council chambers that he would receive recognition for his department’s support of the National Guard and Reserve.
He views supporting the reserve components of the armed forces as something every employer should do, “I didn’t know that this award was coming, and it’s for me being able to work with them, cover their shifts, make sure that they’re there when they need to be there, and being supportive of their situations or their status in the armed services,” said Chief McFarland.

He received the award as part of National Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Week.
