Police Investigate Center Wheeling Shots Fired Incident


Police in Wheeling are investigating an early morning shots fired incident in Center Wheeling.

The incident started shortly before 1:55 a.m. at 25th and Chapline Street.

According to a woman outside of the Family Dollar, she stated an unknown black man tried to snatch her purse and assault her. She then ran from the area and told her boyfriend, who attempted to confront that person.

According to the complainant, shortly after her boyfriend arrived in area of 25th and Chapline Streets gunshots were exchanged. Police say it is unclear how many people were involved or exchanged shots at this time. Witnesses say a vehicle leaving the scene heading south on 24th Street and north on Market Street.

A second witness reported hearing shots fired at 24th Street and Lane D (behind the store). Detectives found shell casings in that location.

There are no suspects at this time and the incident is under investigation. According to police, nearby surveillance video is being gathered.
