The Fort Steuben Mall and Walmart are now open after suspicious materials found inside of a Macy’s shipment had to be exploded by a bomb squad.
We first brought breaking news at noon just moments after that controlled explosion.
The package originated in Southern California before being sent to a distrabution center in Ohio.
Steubenville City manager tells us that they are leaning towards it not being a real bomb, but are still investigating.
“We looked at it. We treated it as a possible explosive device, and that’s how its been treated since day one,” said Steubenville City Manager, James Mavromatis. “What they did, they got the device outside, they neutralized it by going after the battery pack.”
Now, because of this situation, the mall, including a usually very busy Walmart had to be closed for hours.
UPDATE: On the scene. Bomb sniffing dog is being lead to the loading dock area where the materials are sealed inside a truck trailer.— Kristine Varkony (@KristineVarkony) April 20, 2016
