One 18-year-old was less than a week away from walking across the stage to get his high school diploma when his parents were tragically killed in a motorcycle accident.

According to KBMT-TV, a police officer in Orange, Texas who had to break the devastating news to a Little Cypress-Mauriceville graduate, showed up to his graduation to support him.

Lt. Eric Ellison said telling Kazzie Portie, 18, who is the youngest of five children, about his parent’s death was one of the hardest things he’s faced in his 21 year career. KBMT-TV reported Riley and Emily Portie, of Orange, died Sunday May 24 when a pickup truck smashed into their motorcycle on West Park Ave. The driver, Travis Collins, 29, also of Orange, is facing two charges of intoxication manslaughter.

Ellison attended Kazzie’s graduation less than a week after the accident so that he could be the first to congratulate him on stage.

“I walked up on the stage he looked at me and I looked at him and we both cried and that’s OK,” Lt. Ellison said. “I told him ‘you’re going to walk and your folks are going to have a front row seat and I’m going to be there.’”

According to Lt. Ellison, Kazzie is sticking with his plans to go to college.
