The OVAC Queen of Queens Pageant is only one day away.
It’s a pageant that has been around for decades.
One of the pageant’s first participants was Mary Kay Haas who represented Wellsburg High School back in 1953.
Haas was only 18 years old at the time, but can remember some moments as if they were yesterday.
The event took place in the Pine Room at Oglebay and can remember reading the poem “If” for the talent portion.
Haas says the pageant made her feel like she was “somebody.”
“Looking back on it now, I still can’t believe that it happened to me, because I came from a family — we didn’t have a lot. My dad worked hard,” Haas said.
Haas says her mother made all of her outfits for the pageant and did her hair. Another exciting part was her being included in the OVAC parade that traveled from Wheeling to Weirton.
Haas is one of only two attending this weekend’s event who were in the pageant more than 50 years ago.
The Queen of Queen’s pageant starts tomorrow at 7 at the Capital Theater. The winner will be announced during half time at Sunday’s OVAC game.
