The council meeting at the city building in Moundsville was packed with people concerned about the future of the Sanford Center. The center is at the site of the old Sanford School in Moundsville. It is the current home to several community programs for children and adults, like Take a bow Dance studio, Teaching of Tae Kwon Do studio, Therapeutic Touch massage center, and more. These businesses could now be in jeopardy due to a zoning issue.
Residents and business owners presented their opinions at the meeting, some for and some against the re-zoning.The hot topic began awhile back when the center applied to expand as a commercial zone. After being denied the zone by the planning commission, businesses and the public have been worried the center may close its doors forever.
“If my business would have to be shut down it would be hard to find another place to go where you get that opportunity to meet the people, then everybody’s got to run around and find where you’re at, when everybody already knows. That’s the nice thing about being in there,” Noah Bergen, Owner and Instructor at Teaching of Tae Kwon Do Studio.
Businesses owners like Noah enjoy the location for their business. People living in the area say that the center can cause traffic, late-night noise, and driveway blockages. They also say they are worried if the space is made commercial, what will go in next?
No official decisions were made at the meeting, and council will take all recommendations to the planning commission during their next meeting. Council also said during the meeting that their intention is not to permanently close the businesses.
