Sleep Out Planned to Coincide With National Runaway Prevention Month

This year’s Wheeling Sleep Out, set for November 6, 2015 at the JB Chambers Sports Complex, has the theme “Freezing For a Reason.”

Youth Services System will be set up at the Ohio Valley Mall on Friday and Saturday to sign people up for the Sleep Out.

In its fifth year, teams register on the Sleep Out website and compete for prizes.

Each team sleeps out all night in a cardboard box they’ve made themselves.

“You create a structure that you sleep out in, on the field, throughout the night. And the materials that you can use are cardboard, tape, rope, you can use battery powered lighting for effect, and that’s pretty much it. Last year it got down to 20 degrees. I think that’s the coldest it has been,” said YSS Events Coordinator, Sondra Jackson.

Over the years, cardboard shelters have been created to resemble castles, trains, picnic baskets, buses, boats and caskets.

The grand prize goes to the top fund raising team. This year, they’ll get a weekend stay at Grandview Park.

The Sleep Out is held in November to coincide with National Runaway Prevention Month.
