Each patient has a private room and each room has a specific purpose. There’s a seamless anti-microbial floor and an air flow system that keeps germs from one patient from spreading to the next. There some of the features in Barnesville Hospital’s new emergency room.
The first three rooms are built for infectious disease cases–anything from Ebola to measles.

“They’re negative pressure meaning there’s no air flow out into the hallways, into the other treatment areas,” said Peggy Douglas, Dir. of Education & Outreach

There’s a Safe Room, for patients with psychological disorders or drug overdoses– outfitted so they can’t hurt the staff or themselves.

“The fire suppression system in the ceiling is recessed so there’s no danger of strangulation right down to the cabinet doors, there’s special hardware on the doors.”

Another room is for sexual assault victims.

It has its own rest room, and increased privacy features.

The emergency room entrance will have a bullet-proof window between staff and walk-ins. And two rooms will be urgent care fast track–for cases that are simple and speedy– like a child with an earache or a pipeline worker with poison ivy.

The new Emergency Room costs $3.5 million.

A $1.5 million loan came from the Village of Barnesville. Then a capital campaign, where charity started at home.

“So our auxiliary made the very first gift of $250,000 which is a tremendous gift, That’s a lot of bake sales and book fairs,” said Jan Chambers, Dir. of Development. “We then went to our employees who had an initial goal of $95,000 and they ended up raising $265,000.”

They say Barnesville Hospital has always served the under-served, especially now with gas and oil drilling.

Phase one of the new emergency room opens May 19.

Phase two, which will be the refurbished existing facility, will open in September.
