St. Clairsville Police now have body cameras and will become a standard part of each officer’s uniform.
Chief Jeff Henry had been wanting to get body cameras for all his officers, but there was no room in the budget.
So when the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus approached him, asking how they could help his department, he told them and hey donated the $2,900. Now, all nine officers have a body cam.
Henry says they’re almost mandatory these days.
“It’s definitely going to help prevent violence toward the officer if the suspect knows they are being videotaped. Also it’s going to make the officer more accountable in their job,” said Chief Henry.
Chief Henry says the officers activate the body cam for every encounter with the public, from a barking dog complaint to a domestic violence incident.
The camera has audio, video even night vision.
At the end of their shift, each officer unplugs it, and downloads their video into their own file.
