Tax Revenue Helping Theater Pay Off Debt

The historic Capitol Theatre in Wheeling is getting a boost from oil and gas drillers staying in local hotels.

Officials with the Wheeling-Ohio County Convention Bureau say that the new hotel-motel tax is helping them pay off the debt they owe for the theater.

The organization’s hotel-motel revenue increased from 662 thousand dollars in 2009 to more than 1 million dollars in 2014. Officials expect the debt for the theater to be entirely paid by May 2020.
