More than 13,000 workers at ArcelorMittal facilities in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Minnesota, South Carolina and Louisiana gathered at rallies across the country on Wednesday to show continued support for fair contracts, including in the Ohio Valley.
Contract negotiations have been happening for more than a year now since old contracts expired on September 1, 2015.
Much of the dispute comes over medical deductibles for retirees.
Those in Weirton are grateful that so many are willing to stick their necks out to stand in solidarity with them.
“Unbelievable that they’re supporting us so much. I kind of thought when I left I’d get thrown under the bus, just like so many other times in this area, but they’re really supporting us. And it means a lot to everyone,” said Bob Marshall, a retired Steel Worker.
Active steel worker Brian Brecht said, “We don’t want to lose our job, or go on strike, or have a lockout. Hopefully we’ll get these negotiations over with and everything will be back to normal.”
United Steelworkers negotiators have reported some progress in recent weeks, and hope to have the issue resolved as soon as possible.
