Trial for Ohio father of decomposed child set to begin

MEDINA, Ohio (AP) – A trial is scheduled to begin Monday for the father of a 21-month-old Ohio girl whose decomposed body was found in a crib.

The charges against Eric Warfel include corpse abuse and tampering with evidence. Warfel previously pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but was found competent to stand trial. A judge – not a jury – will decide Warfel’s guilt or innocence.

Ember Warfel’s body was discovered by a cable company worker last July in a Medina apartment.

Prosecutors have said Ember’s autopsy was completed but the coroner hasn’t ruled on a cause of death because of the level of decomposition. Warfel’s attorney says Ember was born with severe medical problems.

Warfel had another daughter who died in 2013. That was ruled a “sudden unexplained infant death.”
