The Wheeling Police Department have arrested two people after an on-duty officer is assaulted in North Wheeling Saturday night.

Officers were called to the 700 block of Main Street at 10:55 p.m. after tires were slashed on a vehicle. Police said Gregory Nightengale, 44 of Wheeling, started arguing with the officer about the tires.

As the officer attempted to put Nightengale under arrest, police said he threw several punches and started running away from the scene. The officer chased down Nightengale and deployed his taser. Police said Nightengale continued to resist, and bit the officer a number of times.

During the arrest, Liza Lynn Nightengale, 47 of Wheeling, allegedly kicked the officer in the face.

Additional units were called in to assist the officer, who was taken to a local hospital, treated for his injuries and released.

Both are charged with Malicious Assault on a Police Officer and were taken to the Northern Regional Jail.
