After notifying family members, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office has released the identity of the man shot in an alleged home invasion as Mykel Crooms, 28, of East Liverpool, OH.
ORIGINAL STORYA homicide investigation is underway after authorities discovered a body Tuesday morning at a home at 100 Rear Grant Street in Newell, WV.
Police received a call about 1:00 am from a woman claiming she heard fireworks or gunshots coming from a neighbors residence. When officers arrived on scene they located a male victim outside the residence. After assessing the situation, officers notified Hancock County Sheriff Ralph Fletcher, the Chief Deputy and detectives.
According to Sheriff Fletcher, the homicide is believed to have taken place where the victim was found.
Scott Haney, a neighbor, says it happened only a couple of yards from his home, where his three children were sound asleep in their beds.
“I have three small children living in this house and their bedroom is literally right across the street from where that happened,” he said. “I mean I watched everything that went on when you see somebody shot right across the street from your house, that’s not a place to have your children.”
After canvassing the neighborhood, asking neighbors what they heard, deputies located a person of interest as well as a car that may have been in the area at the time if the homicide.
“Through questioning of those still left at the scene, knowing who lived in the area and putting two and two together, we were able to put together some names that seemed to fit,” Fletcher said.
That person is being questioned and a search warrant being executed on the car. Fletcher went on to say more witnesses will be interviewed as they wade through conflicting stories.
