UPDATE: Verdict Returned in Rape Case Against Former Steubenville Fire Chief

UPDATE: 

A verdict has been returned in the case of a former Steubenville fire chief accused of rape.

After about an hour of deliberations, the jury returned a guilty verdict for John Mencer, who was facing charges of rape and sexual battery. 

On Thursday, the family member he was accused of raping testified via closed circuit television. His mother then took the stand afterward. Mencer’s re-hired attorney, Aaron Miller, asked the mother if she had coached the child prior to his testimony, and she said no. 

There is no word on when Mencer will be sentenced.

A jury had been selected to hear the case of an accused rapist in Jefferson County. 

John Mencer is now choosing to represent himself in this case. His former attorney Aaron Miller as been appointed as stand-by counsel. 

During jury selection, Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge Michelle Miller had to remind Mencer to keep is questions relevant to the selection. 

Prosecutors say Mencer raped and sexually abused a family member from June to August of 2014. 

Opening statements will begin Thursday morning.
