UPDATE: Victim Reportedly Beat to Death Over Last Can of Beer

Police have released the name of the man they say was beaten to death by one of his good friends over the last can of beer they were drinking.

Police say 59 year old John Hazuda was killed at a home on South 8th Street in Steubenville.

Richard Hendershot is charged with murder after he allegedly got into an argument with Hazuda over who would get the last can of beer.

UPDATE Friday 10:30 am

Bond has been set at $1 million each for Victor Lytle, 22, and Richard Hendershot, 34, both of Steuebenville.

Hendershot has been charged with murder. He faces anywhere from 15 years to life in prison.

Lytle has been charged with complicity to commit murder and also faces 15 years to life in prison.

A preliminary hearing is set for next Friday, April 3 at 9 a.m.

A 59-year-old man is dead after a fight broke out over who would get the last beer.

Steubenville Police Chief Bill McCafferty said the call came in as an assault. Everyone involved had been drinking.

When police arrived on scene, they could see one of the men arrested, Richard Hendershot, reportedly dragging the victim through the house. Police had to force their way into the home, by then Hendershot allegedly threw the body into the basement.

The other man arrested, Victor Lytle, allegedly pretended to be asleep. As of Friday morning, there is no indication that he was directly involved in the murder but he is being charged with complicity to commit murder.

Chief McCafferty believes the victim was beaten to death. He also said that Hendershot has known the victim for several years and that Hendershot was actually arrested for assaulting him before in 2014.

Police are waiting to release the victim’s name until his family has been notified.

Both suspects are expected in court Friday morning. Stay with 7News for updates on this story.

An investigation in underway Friday morning in Steubenville after an overnight assault call turns into a potential murder case.

According to Steubenville Police report, they were called to 107 South 8th Street in Steubenville for a possible assault.

The report says police had to force entry into the home. Once they were inside they discovered an unresponsive man in the basement, that had no vital signs.

As of Friday morning, two men have been taken into custody in connection to that victim’s death. Victor Lytle , 22, and Richard Hendershot, 34, both of Steuebenville.
