After Target issued a statement in April allowing people to choose the restroom that corresponds with their gender identity, one father took a stand against the policy by standing guard while his daughter used the restroom at Target.
In a video posted to Coach Dave’s YouTube, he is heard saying to a Target employee, “My daughter is in the restroom. I’m just kind of guarding it right now because I was in yesterday, and they told us that a man could in fact walk in on her while she’s in that restroom.”
“There’s no warning that a man could walk in that restroom. There’s no warning at all. I feel that I have a moral obligation to warn women,” he said.
The employee then asks him to leave the building and if he would like her to get the authorities involved, encouraging him to talk to headquarters about the issue.
He responds to her saying, “It’s not your fault. It’s not your fault. You’re trying to do your job. I’m here trying to do my job to protect my daughter and protect women.”
Another employee proceeded to leave the building, asking onlookers to stop filming, shortly before the authorities arrived.
Responding law enforcement is heard saying, “That is their policy. We are not here to to determine what their policies are.”
“At this point they do want you guys to leave the property, and that’s the reason why we’re here. I’m going to ask you guys to leave the property,” an officer said.
When authorities were asked if a man could walk into a building in Ohio and walk into a women’s restroom, an officer responded, “It’s not a violation. There’s not a law that I’m aware of that says a man can’t walk into a women’s restroom.”
The father is later heard asking, “When I walk away from here with my sign, who’s going to guarantee the safety of the women walking into that bathroom?” Officers responded, “Nobody can guarantee anybody’s safety anywhere.”
Target previously issued a statement saying: “We believe that everyone—every team member, every guest, and every community—deserves to be protected from discrimination, and treated equally. Consistent with this belief, Target supports the federal Equality Act, which provides protections to LGBT individuals, and opposes action that enables discrimination.”
