Weirton Mom Slapped with Outrageous Water Bill

Carrie Campbell has lived at her home in Weirton for the last five years, never once paying more than $100  for her water bill. Until just last month when she received a bill for $1058. She says there’s just no way she can afford that.

“I don’t have $1100 to pay it, you know. I have three kids in school,” Campbell said. “I mean I can pay $100 here and there, but I can’t pay no $1100. That’s just ridiculous.

Campbell and her husband showed us the bill. It says that they used 92,000 gallons of water in March. Campbell says they don’t even own a washing machine or dishwasher for that to even be possible.

“After five years, I know what my bill is going to be. It’s just ridiculous. I think somebody messed up and I think that need to admit to that.”

Campbell posted her concern on Facebook and people immediately began commenting and sharing their same experiences. So what’s the reason for the increase?

Utility Director Butch Mastrantoni says aside from the possibility of a leaky pipe,  there could be a number of other reasons for the sudden increase.

“The water bill has sanitary sewer, utility tax, garbage in addition to water, so there are four other items on there that you’re being billed for,” Mastrantoni said.

A sewage rate increase also went into effect on the first of the year, because of the new sewage system project that was completed eight to nine months ago.

Mastrantoni says there are payment plans that residents can get on if they are having a hard time paying their bills. Customers can call the water garage or the water treatment plant to get more information.
