Motorists may notice more police officers on the roadways in West Virginia. It’s all part of an annual Holiday Blitz geared towards saving lives and keeping you safe as you head out to celebrate.
The holidays are a time for families and friends to get together and celebrate, but they can also be a time for increased crime, especially on the roadways according to Wheeling Police Officer Martin Kimball.
“Often times people involve themselves in alcohol and/ or drugs during these celebrations and it leads to some poor choices on their behalf,” Kimball says. “Often they decide to get behind the wheel and say let’s go to another friends house or let’s go to another bar.”
Officer Kimball said this is why it’s so important to hold a Holiday Blitz each year.
The government funded safety program helps keep impaired drivers off the roadways.
Now through Dec. 31 law enforcement agencies from across the country will be out in full-force and there is something you can do to help too.
“If you see an impaired driver call law enforcement agencies immediately Together we can help keep our roadways safer and prevent needless tragedies,” explains Kimball.
In December 2012, there were over 1,500 fatalities nationwide, a third of those were caused by drunk drivers.
Law Enforcement officers say drunk driving is a 100% preventable.
Here are some tips on how you can make it home safely:
1. Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin Designate a sober driver and leave your keys at home.
2. If you have been drinking use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member or use public transportation.
3.Help others–if you know someone has been drinking don’t let them drive
4. If you see impaired drives don’t hesitate to call your local law enforcement.
