West Virginia students recognized at WVSSAC Academic Achievement Awards

Several middle and high school athletes and band members from around the Mountain State were honored at the WVSSAC Academic Achievement Awards Saturday morning.

The award breakfast is in conjunction with the WVSSAC Super Six Championships and recognizes school athletes and band members that also excel in the classroom.

Organizers say acknowledging the students’ academic achievements is important, as their education will impact their future.

“Athletics is a great opportunity for kids, but academics is where they’re going to make their mark. So, that’s one of the reasons that we think its an important part of our weekend,” said Chairman of the Academic Awards Breakfast Christine Carder.

“For us, in the word “student-athlete,” student comes first. We think it’s so important to recognize the students’ accomplishments in the classroom as well as on the field,” added WVSSAC Executive Director Bernie Dolan.

In total, 18 awards were given out to groups and individuals at the middle and high school levels.
