CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – National union figures are heading to West Virginia to rally against the Republican Legislature.

The rally will be noon Saturday at the Capitol. Labor leaders attending include: American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, National AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, United Mine Workers President Cecil Roberts and Teamsters General Secretary-Treasurer Ken Hall.

A state AFL-CIO news release says thousands are expected to attend.

Labor groups say several Republican proposals are bad for workers. They’re fighting the introduction of charter schools, repeal of Common Core educational standards and alternative teacher certification programs like Teach for America.

They oppose changes to the prevailing wage for construction projects and a scale-back of mine safety laws.

The GOP has said the agenda offers new direction for a dismally performing educational system, while benefitting the economy.
