West Virginia Woman Admits to Setting Home on Fire Due to Cockroaches

A West Virginia woman was arrested last week after the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office found that she started a fire in her mobile home.

Sandra Ward, 65, told authorities that she set fire to some papers and throw rugs that were on the kitchen floor of the trailer on 10 Mile Road in Belington. She also placed a basket in front of the bathtub, she said, and set fire to the paper that was in it before setting her bed on fire too.

Ward told authorities she set the fire because she found a cockroach earlier that morning and was upset with the landlords. She said it was the fourth or fifth cockroach she had found since moving into the trailer and that it “made her so mad.”

“I’m not denying setting the fire,” Ward told authorities.

Ward is currently in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail in lieu of $20,000 bond.
