Wheeling Central Caps Losing Season


The Wheeling Central Maroon Knights will not be a part of the Class A playoffs in 2014, following a 27-6 loss to Class AAA Spring Mills on Saturday afternoon at Wheeling Island Stadium.

Three early turnovers, lead to three Spring Mills touchdowns as the Cardinals opened up a 20-0, first-quarter lead.

The Maroon Knights got on the board on an Isaac Rine 10-yard touchdown pass to Ben Duplaga in the second quarter. Duplaga, one of three Central seniors, had 44 yards rushing and 72 through the air. Rine passed for 104 yards.

The Maroon Knights finish the season with a 4-6 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 1997. They also haven’t had a losing season since 1994.

Spring Mills finishes the season at 5-5. Demetreus Jalepes had 88 yards on the ground, including a touchdown, along with a 26-yard fumble recovery for touchdown.
