Wheeling Christmas Parade Makes Memories for Young and Old

It’s a chilly tradition that brings in thousands to kick off the holiday season and residents are already talking about how excited they are for this years Wheeling Christmas Parade.

“The Christmas parade is like the beginning of the Christmas season,” said Centre Cup Coffee owner, Ann Bommer. “I just can’t wait. It’s just terrific.”

The 29th Annual Wheeling Christmas Parade begins Friday at 6:30 p.m. It’s one of the biggest events in the Ohio Valley and that means traffic.

“You can count on Main and Market Street and Center Wheeling to the area of 23rd Main and Market, being pretty much shut down from 6 p.m. till probably 9 p.m. until everything clears out.” said Wheeling police Lt. Shaun Flanegin.

Parade goers will want to make sure to bundle up as temperatures are expected to be in the 20’s. But the chilly weather is all part of the experience for this annual tradition that many locals remember when they were young.

“I remember being there with my dad. I remember being cold, but I also remember the music,” said Katy Zane of Wheeling. “Like watching the people walk by and playing the instruments in the bands. It was really cool.”

A concert before the parade will be on 14th Street in Wheeling between Market and Main Streets starting Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. until the parade begins at 6:30 p.m. Centre Cup Coffee will also be open with hot drinks all day Thursday until 9 pm.

For those not venturing out into the cold, the broadcast of the Wheeling Christmas Parade presented by Wheeling Hospital will begin at 6:30 p.m. on WTRF ABC Ohio Valley and live streamed on WTRF.com. Don’t miss the opportunity to Watch & Win during the broadcast.
