Racing greyhounds and their owners gathered at Wheeling Island Hotel Casino and Racetrack Thursday night to kickoff the Wheeling Island National.
The Wheeling Island National race will take place on Monday, May 30th and offers the biggest live racing payouts of the year.
65 dogs were announced as participants–made up of some of the newest talent from across the U-S.
“When you start to get deeper into the competition, the races are more heated, more contended. You’re going to get to see the cream of the crop in terms of fresh, young, raw talent from across the country,” said Steve Sarras of Sarras Kennels.
What makes this race different from others is that the dog owners must sign their pups up up to race before they even start formal training!
Greyhound owners from 11 states will be participating this year.
The champion will earn roughly $2,000 per second winning the race.
