The Wheeling Suspension remains closed until at least Thursday, while crews work to make repairs, yet again. This time after a driver lost control of their vehicle and hit portions of the bridge that are crucial to the structural integrity of the bridge.
With all of the ongoing issues happening on this historic structure, DOH workers have been forced to close the bridge several times in just the last few months, and the repair bill doesn’t come cheap. This last repair will cost about $3,000, “I use it everyday, everyday going to work or just out and about, it’s a big inconvenience,” said Earnest Waugh a Wheeling Island resident.
This most recent incident happened on Friday morning and will cause the bridge to remain closed until at least Thursday, making the morning commute for some a little more tedious than usual, “I think people need to be more cognizant of the age, because it does have that working against it and they need to follow more of the rules of the bridge, which is the 50-foot limit , which would be nice if they would comply,” said Gloria Hartman, another Wheeling Island resident.
According to police records; the incident happened around 2:15 Friday morning, when the driver of a white Jeep Liberty, crossed the bridge, loss control and did the damage crews had been busy working to repair.
Just about 4 weeks ago, the bridge was closed for several days after a Greyhound Bus crossed the Bridge. That incident cost $15,000 for inspections and other money used to pay crews to check things over.
We’ll keep you updated on when the bridge does re-open.
