Wheeling Park, Madonna Earn Regional Golf Crowns


 The Wheeling Park and Weirton Madonna golf teams qualified for next week’s state tournament after winning regional championships today.

Wheeling Park shot a 219 at the Pines Country Club in Morgantown, with senior Cole Hand earning medalist honors, firing an even par 71. Freshman Jacob Nickell shot a 73, Dylan Wojcik 75 and Kyle Wensel fired an 80.

University High (230) also qualified for states, but they were 11 shots back of the defending Class 3 A state champion Patriots.

In Class A, Weirton Madonna won the regional tournament at Moundsville Country Club, with a 230 total, seven strokes clear of St.Marys

Freshman Howard Peterson fired a 72, Nick Mazur 76, Matthew Lyons 82, and Hunter Payne 84.

Two area qualifiers in Class A include Wheeling Central’s Sean McFarland (76) and Peyton Moore of Magnolia (77).

The West Virginia State Golf Tournament is next Tuesday and Wednesday at Oglebay Park’s Jones Course.
