Wheeling Police: Explosive Device Found in Downtown was Homemade Fireworks

UPDATE:

The device was detonated about a half hour after authorities arrived on scene.

Police said it was a homemade firework type of explosive.

They stressed there is no danger to the Downtown Wheeling area or anyone in it. 


ORIGINAL STORY: 

Market & 11th Streets in Downtown Wheeling were closed while police investigate a potential explosive device found on the lot where The Health Plan is expected to build.

It happened around 2 p.m. on Wednesday. 

According to the Wheeling Police Department, officers were called to 12th & Market Streets after wires were reported down. A suspicious package was found in the 1100 block lot.

Wheeling Police asked nearby pedestrians to stay away from the area while they took care of the device.
