Sara Ann Lathem took a plea deal right as jury selection began for her trial.
She plead to two counts of child endangerment and was sentenced to eight years behind bars.
Jury selection began for the trial of a woman accused of killing her child in Jefferson County.
Sara Ann Lathem is facing charges of aggravated murder and child endangerment. The charges stem from an incident nearly a year ago when the father reportedly picked the baby up to go to his house.
When Lathem called to check in, the baby was sleeping and fine, but the next morning, her boyfriend said he found the five-month-old unresponsive. Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla reported the baby’s body showed signs of child abuse.
Lathem has entered pleas of not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity.
Prosecutor Jane Hanlin said jury selection should wrap up around 5 p.m., and that opening statements were expected to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
