They might not be one of the area’s biggest marching bands but they are definitely on of the best and they have the trophies to prove it. The Tyler Consolidated Silver Knight are this weeks CA House Band of the Week.
Wayne Smith has been band director in Tyler County for thirty years. He says hard work is not a problem for the thirty members of this years band. Smith says the kids are willing to put in long hours and rarely miss a practice.
That hard work has paid off for the Silver Knights. They have done very well in competitions over the past several years. Their halftime show consists of several upbeat jazz numbers that has the crowd on their feet every week.
“This years band is kind of small so we know everyone real well. I feel like we are fairly disciplined like we usually are. So far we are winning and that’s always fun,” said Scott Gorby.
“At the end of the day the crowd, the student section, all of the fans give us so much love and respect. When ever we win it feels great,” said Alex Lohr.
Senior band member Sydney White says her experience in the band has made a huge impact on her life and says it can be a great benefit for any student.
“The arts program is actually going down and it needs to be brought back up because it actually makes people smarter. It makes them focus more on what they really need to do. It takes a lot. You really need to be smart to do marching band because you have to move your feet, you have to play, you have to know where you are, you have to do it all at once, you have to multi-task,” said White.
It should also be noted, this will be the Wayne Smith final year as band director. It marks the end of a career that has span three decades. He says he will miss it terribly, but looks forward to traveling and spending time with his family.
