Throughout this high school football season 7 News will travel the area to bring you an up close look at some of the best marching band around.

This week, we take you to “Red Devil Land” where the St. Clairsville marching band has been growing by leaps and bounds over the past few years.

They are this week’s WTRF 7 News, CA House Band of the Week.

When Justin Schwertfeger took over as band director at St Clairsvillle there were about thirty kids in the band. Now, five years later there are over sixty members. Those numbers are expected to grow in the coming years.

This year’s band is young with only three seniors but their halftime shows are described as exciting, energetic, and entertaining. Schwertfeger said the show offers something for everyone, “This year we are playing tunes from Elvis. Michael Jackson, and Lady Gaga. Something for the young and the old,” said Schwertfeger.

The band members, like field commander Irene Heath, said that putting together a quality halftime show requires endless hours of practice, “We go through two weeks of intense practice, breaking down every single move and this is exactly where you have to be and if your not your wrong,” said Heath.

Band member Jared Haskett agreed, “There is a lot of work everything from the kids learning the music and memorizing it to the band director writing up the two shows. Two weeks of band camp and two hours everyday after school,” Haskett said.

Despite all the hard work the kids said being in the band is a tremendous and rewarding experience, one they wouldn’t trade for anything, “There are so many things about all the people and experiences. Band makes you a better person,” said band member Jenna Watkins.

They said there is nothing like the satisfaction of playing in front of a large crowd and knowing they just pulled off a stellar halftime show, Watkins said, “It’s feels amazing! Your heart is beating. You have that sense of pride in what you did. It’s a feeling like no other,” Watkins said.

Allie Hamilton agreed, “You get the overwhelming sense of satisfaction that you did a great job,” Hamilton said.

You can catch their show this Saturday night at Harding Stadium in Steubenville, When the Red Devils take on Steubenville Catholic.
