A convicted sex offender was working as a House of Delagates intern, but has since been fired.

23-year-old Alexander Phillip Collins began his paid internship at the start of this year’s legislative session, but he was let go a week before session ended when his legal problems surfaced.

Collins was assigned to the House Education Committee. He was convicted of downloading child porn in 2013.

One lawmaker says there needs to be tighter background checks.

“Well we should do background checks as we’re allowed to do. I mean we simply made a mistake. And we know now to correct it and should make those steps to correct it,” said Del. Ron Walters.

This was not the first time Collins was a paid House intern. He was also hired back in 2012 under the previous administration, when the sex charges against him were still pending in court.
