American Legion Post 159 making sure all members can enjoy outdoor activities

Community

One local veterans organization wants to make sure its handicapped members get to enjoy outdoor barbecues and picnics.

The American Legion Post 159 in St Clairsville is planning to build a handicap accessible shelter behind its building on Legion Road.

The post is planning a fundraiser called the “Freedom Walk”.

You can purchase an engraved paver for $100. They will create three lines for a walk way to the shelter from the post.

“When we have our annual picnic or a barbecue, people in wheelchairs or walkers, they can’t get up under the tent,” explained Commander Larry Barnes. “So, they end up sitting inside while everybody else is outside. So, our handicapped members will be able to go out and enjoy it like everyone else.”

This new shelter is not just for members, it’s for the community too.

Any organization in the community will be able to rent the pavilion.

American Legion Post 159 also created a GoFundMe to raise money for the pavilion. For more information on purchasing the pavers, click here
