Officials are looking into removing all parking meters throughout Bellaire.
Currently, most of the meters don’t work and since they’re so old, their parts are no longer made.
Officials said buying new meters is not in the village’s budget.
That’s why acting police chief Dick Flanagan proposed their removal.
“There’s other communities in the same financial situation we are. They don’t have meters. Let’s just go back to what other communities do. Let’s keep the meter man and go around and chalk tires,” Flanagan said.
Flanagan has also proposed removing the village’s Leeds computer program.
The program used to issue parking tickets, but with so many broken meters, the program hasn’t been used in about 10 years.
Flanagan said eliminating the system would save the village $8,000.
