Bellaire residents react to new police hire

The dispute over the Bellaire Police Department hiring Officer Timothy Loehmann has made its way to Facebook.

Residents have gone back and forth about their support and concerns over the hiring.

A petition has even made its way onto social media asking for the removal of Officer Loehmann.

7News caught up with residents in Bellaire to see whether they think it’s a good idea for the Bellaire Police Department to give Officer Loehmann a second chance.

“I don’t think so. He might do it again, especially being in a position of power,” said David Vanscoy, a Bellaire resident.

“No. They don’t hire anyone else with a background like his. Shooting people, drugs or anything like that,” added Clarice, a Bellaire resident.

Other residents have voiced their concerns that law enforcement should be held to a higher standard.

Meanwhile, others argued on Facebook that Chief Flanagan had the chance to look at the man before him and judge him.

They believe Chief Flanagan must have made the best call.
