Bethlehem Temple’s 27th annual Easter food basket giveaway was a success

The day before Easter, hundreds of people will line up for the Bethlehem Apostolic Temple’s annual Easter Food Basket Giveaway.

They’ve done it for 27 years, giving out Easter hams, other meats, vegetables, fruits, pasta, pastries and more.

Several times they’ve had a turnout of a thousand people.

Rev. Darrell Cummings says Easter comes at a time when we are emerging from the darkness of winter, which can take its toll on people’s spirits.

“Some go through great depressions in the winter,” Rev. Cummings noted. “More suicides are around Christmas than any other time. Springtime and Easter is hopefully resurrection. A resurrection of hope. And I’m very, very grateful to those who help us to carry out this mission that God has laid on our heart.”

“Wesbanco is proud to be a supporter of Bethlehem Apostolic Temple and the Dream Center, so each year we donate to each of the giveaways they have, especially at Easter,” said Shelly Thomas, assistant vice president at Wesbanco, who handed him a $1,000 check.

Rev. Cummings says they’re also giving out children’s Easter outfits and shoes, some school supplies and for the first time, some household cleaning supplies.

Doors open 11 a.m. Saturday at the Dream Center in North Wheeling, across from the church.

It lasts until everyone is served or until the food runs out.

They say people often line up at 5 a.m. or even the night before.
