Bob Murray reflects on the impact President Trump has on coal industry

Community

Everyone is buzzing about the President’s visit to Wheeling this weekend.

7News sat down with Bob Murray of Murray Energy Corporation, and talked about the positive impact he believes President Trump has on the Coal Industry.

Murray also says he knows the President cares about the working people.

“I’m very pleased he’s coming to Wheeling. Donald Trump cares deeply about working people and that’s what the Ohio Valley is all about is working people,” said Chairman, President, CEO, and Founder of Murray Energy Corporation Bob Murray. “These are his kind of people right here. So I’m glad to see him come.”

Murray said the previous President put a lot of laws and regulations on employers and employees in this country, which he believes has hurt America.

“Look at what’s happened to the stock market. It’s almost double what it was under Obama, it’s getting there. Unemployment is the lowest in 40 years. How can you dispute that. There’s hope in the county now,” said Murray.

Now Murray said a lot of work still needs to be done to get electricity rates back to where they should be.

“I have a lot of compassion for couples who have worked hard all their life and are retired and are trying to live on a nest egg.” said Murray. “Right now they are paying out 31% of what they bring in to pay for energy, gasoline and electricity. That should not be. “

He said the electric power grid is not reliable. There have been 531 coal fired power plants closed and many of them are in this area.

“There are 10,000 people are going to lose their jobs in the coal mines yet and in the power plants that’s over a 100,000 jobs in the Valley,” said Murray. “That is a huge impact.”

And in addressing the tariffs, Murray said tariffs are hurting the industry.

“He gets it. He understands what needs to be done,” said Murray. “It’s a matter of getting this Congress and the Senate and their leaderships to move on things that he knows needs to be done.”

Murray is a long time supporter of President Trump but believes he understands the business conditions the coal industry faces.
