October is Breast Cancer awareness month, and events are happening all over the Ohio Valley to commemorate those who fought the long hard battle and those who have survived.
The tenth annual Relay for Life event was held Friday afternoon at Bridge Street Middle School. Both Bridge Street Middle and Elm Grove Elementary partner up each year for this Relay for Life.
Over 160 students participated in this afternoon’s walk around the gym.
This year, they raised over $4 thousand dollars to the American Cancer Society.
It was started by a bunch of interested students and one counselor who lost her sister to breast cancer. Heather Lewis is a former counselor of Bridge Street Middle and now works at Elm Grove Elementary.
Lewis says the hard work done by the students shows how much they care about fighting this terrible disease. “Oh, it warms my heart. We try to teach these kids to look after each other and to show compassion and just doing this part teaches them so much, and they really have stepped it up every year.”
Bridge Street Middle School Principal Joseph Kolb says, “The students at Bridge Street and the faculty, of all our staff members, take pride in this program, and they really go out of their way to make it successful.”
They also honored one Bridge Street teacher, Mrs. O’Donnell, who fought and beat breast cancer just last year, and she is now doing well.
Principal Kolb wants to thank all the faculty, staff, and students for their hard work on this fundraiser.
