Business owners prepare for what they believe is coming–the cracker plant

Community

There’s continued evidence that business owners are preparing for what they believe is inevitable–the cracker plant coming to Belmont County.

In Yorkville at the site of the former Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel mill, there’s ongoing activity.

Belmont County Commissioner Mark Thomas says a company from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, has bought the property and is tearing down some structures that can’t be rehabilitated, while renovating the rest.

“And basically right now they’re just cleaning it up, getting it to have job sites available, when the demand comes,” said Thomas. “So it’s a good thing. These will be old industrial sites, renovated and rehabilitated to welcome new jobs to the Ohio Valley.”

Thomas says in three to four years, hopefully as the cracker plant comes to fruition, the property will be available for spinoff businesses to locate there.

He said he believes it’s a smart use of that property, and a good thing for both Belmont and Jefferson counties.
