The public was invited to attend a centennial observation of Armistice Day at the American Doughboy monument at Wheeling Park.
There was a presentation of Colors, singing of the National Anthem, pledge of Allegiance, an opening prayer, and the reading of a Poem.
Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott gave remarks, and the Keynote Speaker was Dr. Hal Gorby from West Virginia University.
Commander of American Legion Post #1, John Powell said, “WWI was the world war of all wars. Today is the Armistice Day, the passing of 100 years ago today. It is very significant. So its very important to remember our history and where we’ve come from, and where we are today.”
Powell said out of World War I came the American Legion and they are one of the oldest posts in the United States.
