Challenge Wheeling scavenger hunt set for Saturday

Community

For the 5th year, teams across Wheeling are getting ready for West Virginia’s original scavenger race, Challenge Wheeling.

New this year, to beat the June heat, the race will start at 10 a.m. instead of Noon.

If you’re familiar with the race, you know the fun supports a good cause Youth Services Systems.

Tammy Kruse with YSS explains teams of two or more start with a clue sheet that scatters them across the city, visiting different hot spots all the way to the finish line.

The proceeds give kids a safe place to stay, and support the Lazarus and Mary Martha house. Presented by the Flooring Center, the entire course is walk-able and designed for all ages. Getting in on the action this year are employees from The Health Plan.

“Our wellness team is always looking for our employees to do to get up and move,” said Wendy Hodorowski, with The Health Plan.

“You could be anyone that has an interest in solving puzzles and learning the history of Wheeling,” said Tammy Kruse.

“A lot of things are growing in the community and it’s nice to be involved and we wanted to do something just to be apart of it,” said David Contraguerro with The Flooring Center.

Another fun element of the race, the costumes.

Teams can be seen racing in anything from matching shirts to the cast of Scooby Doo. After the 5K, there is a party with food and drinks.

There is still time to register for the event.
