According to the Wheeling Fire Department, around 1:25 a.m., Wednesday crews were dispatched to 619 N. Wabash Street on Wheeling Island for a fire in the basement of a house.

When the first engine company arrived, heavy fire and smoke was reported in the basement and first floor.

The occupant inside the house was able to escape unharmed.

The fire was elevated to a second alarm because of the close proximity of the neighboring homes. Additional off-duty firefighters were called into fight the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
