Democratic Congressional Candidate Ralph Baxter has unveiled his plan for combating the opioid crisis across the country.
Baxter said the problem needs to be treated like a national emergency, calling it the “greatest domestic crisis of our lifetimes.”
On Monday, he outlined a ten year comprehensive plan that focuses on four main topics.
That includes a Declaration of National Emergency under the National Emergencies Act.
He also called for the creation of a federal position of leadership dedicated to the issue, as well as adequate federal funding for prevention, law enforcement, and treatment programs.
“If there is ever an issue in the United States of America that deserves to be treated with the highest authority, this is it. It’s killing 175 Americans each day. More people that can fit in this room, die every day for drug overdoses,” said Baxter.
Baxter also called for the recruitment of thousands of VISTA volunteers to provide the necessary human resources for opioid programs.
