New things are coming to Wheeling Island.
The Fitzsimmons Foundation is donating $150,000 to start Phase 1 and 2 of the Wheeling Island Gateway Park.
Phase 1 will be the construction of the bridge plaza and the second phase will enhance South Front Street and provide a gateway to the park.
The entire project is a total of 6 phases and is more than $2 million.
The park will include the history of the bridge, have an art focal point, and an ADA accessible kayak launch among many other things.
“It’s going to be very important to the city as well as the citizens because it’s a park that’s for everybody. It’s a park that tells the history of the bridge,” said Parks and Recreation Director Jesse Mestrovic. “It’s a park that is very inviting to the community, not just Wheeling Island but also the citizens of Wheeling as well as tourists visiting the Suspension Bridge.”
Rocky Fitzsimmons of the Fitzsimmons Foundation says the organization is pleased to be a part of this project.
