Follansbee officials looking to revitalize downtown

Across the nation, local officials are looking to strengthen their downtown areas, and the City of Follansbee is no exception.

Follansbee Chamber of Commerce President Debbie Puskarich said they’re currently trying to re-vitalize the city and the first step towards that goal is through $500 reimbursement grants.

Chamber members may apply for up to $500 for new signs, lighting, sidewalks, painting, landscaping and other measures to improve the appearance of their businesses.

Grants may not be used for daily operations, such as staffing, and applicants must be members in good standing and provide a $500 match.

Plans call for three grants to be awarded each year, with the first round funded with donations from individuals who asked to remain anonymous.

Puskarich said many of the anonymous donors remarked that “they just wanted Main Street to look nice” and saw a way to help.

The grants will be available to any chamber member, noting its membership includes businesses and individuals from Weirton, Wellsburg and Steubenville.
