Thanks to a generous donation from a community member, the clock tower that once sat atop the Wellsburg City Hall building for years is now being replace.

Wellsburg Mayor Sue Simonetti said Dr. Patricia McCreary donated $100,000 to fund the project, which will feature four LED clocks facing north, south, east, and west.

The new tower will also chime on the hour and play music for events.

Mayor Simonetti said the original clock tower was removed in November 2016 due to deterioration.

She believes the city square has looked empty ever since.

“I was originally concerned that we weren’t going to get to put it up because it’s quite costly, but Dr. McCreary came forward with some money for us and made this all possible for us today. We have good people in this town. That’s what I love about it. People are willing to give back to their community,” said Mayor Simonetti.

Simonetti also wants to thank Murphy Consolidated for volunteering their time to install the new clock.

She said other renovations on the city building will begin at the end of the month, which includes adding a new roof and gutters.
