Hundreds of people came through the doors of the North Wheeling Dream Center Saturday morning where the Bethlehem Apostolic Temple hands out food, clothes, and other items that helps local families celebrate Easter.
This is the 27th year for the Easter Food Basket Giveaway that draws a massive crowd.
Some people even line up hours ahead of time.
Reverend Darrell Cummings says he wants to give families an opportunity to sit down and have a meal together and celebrate the Easter holiday, regardless of their financial situation.
“Hopefully we’re sending them out with a smile. Hopefully they’re feeling hope and joy and feel like their community cares about them,” said Cummings.
They give away hams, other meats, canned and fresh vegetables and fruits, bread, desserts and much more.
There are also clothes and shoes for young boys and girls.
New this year: they gave away cleaning supplies to help those who are recovering from flooding or just need a good spring cleaning.
It takes countless sponsors and volunteers to put it all together.
Volunteer Fannie Davis says she comes back every year to give back to her community around the holiday.
“It’s important to me because I see so many people are hungry and stuff now. I see so many people sitting around in the community that don’t have anything, and I was fortunate enough to have some things, so I want to give back to somebody that doesn’t,” said Davis.
In total, more than 400 people will have an Easter meal this year thanks to the basket giveaway.
